Political patronage and the labour market experience of high-skilled workers: mixed methods evidence from sierra leone

HIGHLIGHTS

  • What: The results from this study show that being politically connected is correlated with employment experience, and in such a context, jobseekers-particularly those without political connections-report leveraging sectors and jobs that they perceive to be fairer in recruitment practices. The findings in this study show that although the development sector, borne out of aid, might attract talent away from the public and private sectors, it can indeed have a positive effect on the labour market by providing job opportunities and employment experience, particularly to those who may not have access to networks.
