On a cold January afternoon in 1929, Elizabeth Ponsonby departed from London Waterloo to her parents` home, Shulbrede Priory in West Sussex. The party was not a success, at least in the view of Elizabeth`s parents, who would subsequently complain in their diaries of the "wretched" and "demoralizing" behavior of modern youth-their hedonistic impulses . . .
