• What: The numerical simulations were designed to match the experiments described in the previous section. While the location of Mach diamonds predicted by the simulation are in good agreement with the experiment shown in figure 8, the local Mach number is over-estimated by ≈20 %. The discrepancy with the experiment can be attributed to the non-negligible Stokes number associated with the seeded particles used with the experimental particle image velocimetry (PIV) system (0.6 μm diameter particles were used).
