- What: The authors aimed to (I) evaluate the role of pigment plaques on vascular changes and disease progression in MacTel, and_(II) study underlying disease mechanisms using the Vldlr-/- mouse model mirroring these changes. The authors show in a longitudinal, retrospective study of eyes with MacTel that perivascular pigment accumulation was associated with reduced vascular leakage and decreased de novo formation of exudative neovascularization. Based on the findings , the authors propose Angiogenesis 28:1 that EMT of the RPE, followed by proliferation, migration and perivascular accumulation may function as a "natural repair mechanism", exerting beneficial, anti-angiogenic . . .
