The impact of thyroid surgery on calcium and magnesium homeostasis: a prospective study

HIGHLIGHTS

  • What: The aim of this study was to highlight the occurrence of hypocalcemia and hypomagnesemia following total thyroidectomy and to assess the correlation between magnesium and calcium levels, thereby providing a better understanding of their homeostasis. According to R and Panduranga Rao, the main goal of intra-capsular dissection should be to split only the third-level branches of the inferior thyroid artery and move on to the back part of the neck . This study has attempted to shed light on the role of magnesium in maintaining postthyroidectomy calcium homeostasis.
