Broadband high coupling efficiency edge coupler with low polarization-dependence on the silicon-nitride platform

HIGHLIGHTS

  • What: The authors propose a double-tip edge coupler on the 100nm 𝑆𝑆𝑖𝑖3 𝑁𝑁4 platform for high efficiency coupling of an on-chip single mode waveguide to a single mode ultra-high numerical aperture (UHNA) fiber. After carefully adjusting the polarization controller, the authors show a TE coupling efficiency as high as 96% at 1615nm (see Fig 4 red curve). The coupler demonstrated in this work shows higher coupling efficiencies for both polarizations than for any other previously demonstrated edge couplers on the Si3N4 and SOI platforms.
