    The multiple-choice test item is objective in the sense that the correct response is unambiguously defined; but since the correct answer is "hidden in plain view", the construction of this item is more complicated than that of the so-called "open question" or constructed-response item, where the test-taker produces her response unaided rather than selects one among preconstructed ones.
