    The upper reservoir can then release water back downhill through turbines to rapidly generate power when electricity demand is high, providing load balancing to a power system (Hunt et_al, 2020; Gilfillan and Pittock, 2022). While generally considered a low-carbon source of generation (the IPCC estimates that life-cycle emissions from hydropower are five percent that of natural gas and three percent that of coal (Schlömer et_al, 2014)), the reservoirs associated with hydropower projects can be a source of greenhouse gas emissions, including carbon_dioxide and methane (Deemer et_al, 2016; Ocko and Hamburg, 2019 . . .
