Candidate biological markers for social anxiety disorder: a systematic review

SUMMARY

    Biological factors may have a role in treatment response both for SAD and generally for anxiety disorders. Some authors investigated polymorphisms within the gene coding for the OT receptor (OXTR, located at 3 p25.3) in families at risk of SAD, finding an association with a specific polymorphism (rs2254298) and with lower salivary oxytocin levels. Some studies, though not all, have so far suggested that patients with SAD may differ significantly from healthy controls (HC) concerning baseline cortisol levels, and/or may demonstrate exaggerated cortisol stress-responsiveness possibly linked to increased social avoidances.
