Flow batteries are unique electric power sources that are rechargeable and allow for independent scaling (decoupling) of energy and power. The latter feature allows for optimizing (runtime, cost, size, weight, etc.) of the system for a particular application, whereas most other energy storing systems (e_g batteries with solid electroactive materials (SEAM), supercapacitors, flywheels) have a narrow range of the energy-to-power ratio (i.e., the characteristic runtime).
