    The export agricultural industries represent a large proportion of world trade flows from developing countries (referred to as "South/Southern" in this paper) to Western countries. Consumers` social concerns seem to be settling on the concept of "a decent living standard". To keep their "licence to operate", producers need to show that the banana plantation workers or banana smallholders, and their families, have a "decent living standard" and that the company contributes to it. All studies on a "decent living standard" initiated or commissioned by the WBF are in fact studies on a living . . .
