    In 1922, O. Stern and W. Gerlach demonstrated experimentally that silver atoms passing through an inhomogeneous magnetic_field experience deflections in spatially different, distinguishable directions. Due to the interaction between the magnetic moment of the particle and the inhomogeneous magnetic_field, a particle passing through the latter experiences a force that changes the trajectory of the particle.
