Rhythmic relating: bidirectional support for social timing in autism therapies

HIGHLIGHTS

SUMMARY

Children with autism have difficulty picking up subtleties of gesture from TD children (Rochat et_al, 2013; Di Cesare et_al, 2017a). Social timing encompasses both individual motor timing (intra-personal sensorimotor integration) and social-motorsynchrony (SMS) (temporal alignment of the perceptions, predictions, and motor behavior of two or more people) (Wimpory et_al, 2002; Fitzpatrick et_al, 2016). Individual motor timing difficulties in autism (including HFA) involve increased variability in individual motor output (Gowen and Hamilton, 2013; Kindregan et_al, 2015; Kaur et_al, 2018), increased sensorimotor "noise" disrupting perceptuomotor integration (Gowen and Hamilton, 2013), and poor temporal integration . . .
