SUMMARY
There has been a shift in the epidemiology of diabetes in old age, and worldwide persons aged 65-79 years has the highest prevalence of diabetes. The prevalence of pharmacologically treated diabetes in 2011 was 3.2%, while the incidence rate was 313 per 100,000 person years. During 2009-2014, in the general Norwegian population aged 30-89 years the incidence of pharmacologically and non-pharmacologically treated type 2 diabetes decreased (from 609 to 398 cases per 100,000 person years), while the prevalence continued to rise and increased with age.
