The COVID 19 pandemic has generated much interest in the relationship between research and policy, and it is clear that there is often no simple linear path from prior medical research to policy responses to COVID 19. Such statements are often added tacked onto research articles, possibly as a way to either underscore the importance of research projects or to try respond to calls by funders and home institutions for research to be "policy relevant".
