    Nodes of Ranvier are the small gaps along myelinated axons where voltage-activated sodium channels in the axolemma generate action potentials to increase impulse conduction velocity by saltatory conduction. Activity-dependent signaling between axons and astrocytes is well established (Orkand et_al, 1966), and action potentials in axons can cause a rise in astrocytic intracellular calcium (Kriegler and Chiu, 1993; Hamilton et_al, 2008; Fields and Ni, 2010).
