    The term "microbiota" identifies the symbiotic relationship of living microorganisms (Bacteria, Fungi, and Viruses) present in the body, defined by not only the community of the microorganisms but also their "theatre of activity". The microbiota spp encode metabolic genes which regulate the degradation of polysaccharides (saccharolytic fermentation) and proteins (putrefactive fermentation) and the synthesis of short-chain fatty_acids (SCFAs).
