SUMMARY
In many jurisdictions in the USA, syringe services programs (SSPs) remained open during the COVID-19 pandemic to provide several life-sustaining and health protective services to PWID, including access to sterile injection equipment and overdose prevention resources. While SSPs have existed in the USA since the 1980s, the COVID-19 pandemic introduced new obstacles for program implementation given social distancing and other COVID-19 mitigation strategies, impacts on funding, and additional stresses on program operations and operators.
