A better understanding of the epidemiology of sepsis from the subgrouping by the location of onset, namely hospital-onset sepsis versus community-onset sepsis perspective, helps in planning future interventional studies of sepsis and devising healthcare policies. Patients with hospital-onset sepsis had more extended stays in the hospital and intensive care unit (ICU) than patients with community-onset sepsis; hospital-onset sepsis was associated with a twofold to threefold increased risk of mortality than community-onset sepsis in the USA.
