It has been suggested that the reported increase in psychiatric and somatic symptoms might be due to an increase in perceived stress, and correlations between perceived stress and reported health complaints, including psychiatric symptoms, have indeed been observed. Although an increase in perceived stress over time is a plausible, and often suggested, explanation for the observed increase in psychiatric and somatic symptoms in society, research linking perceived stress and the occurrence of psychiatric and somatic symptoms is scarce.
