The central organizers of adaptive immunity are T_cells, each of which expresses different T-cell receptors (TCRs) to specifically recognize antigens presented by antigen-presenting cells, such as dendritic cells (DCs). The authors focused on the fact that the antigen specificity of T_cells cannot explain the mechanism by which the immune system discriminates between harmful and harmless antigens.
