SUMMARY
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has posed a serious and persistent threat to global public health and has brought unprecedented changes to daily life. Excess mortality, defined as the increase in deaths compared to the expected number of deaths, has been widely used as a representative indicator for the damage caused by the pandemic with respect to human health.
