Plasma amino acid concentrations in patients with alcohol and/or cocaine use disorders and their association with psychiatric comorbidity and sex

HIGHLIGHTS

SUMMARY

Despite these studies, relevant amino_acids that act as neurotransmitters in complex neural circuits, such as the mesocorticolimbic reward pathway, have been not sufficiently explored as potential peripheral biomarkers. In the nervous system, endogenous excitatory amino_acids such as glutamate (Glu), Ser and glycine (Gly) fulfill synaptic plasticity roles as neurotransmitters. Over the last few years, several investigations have reported that the plasma amino_acid profile differs in the etiology of many neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders such as Huntington`s disease, sclerosis, epilepsy, strokes or Parkinson`s disease. A growing body of evidence suggests that psychiatric disorders . . .
