Within the wind farm, the individual wind turbine wakes expand downstream and gradually join, which reduces the wind speed quickly behind the first row of wind turbines and more gradually with each successive row due to turbulent diffusion. In the downstream, far-field of a wind farm, the individual wind turbine wakes together with the distortion of the flow, due to the wind farm as a whole, result in large-scale farm-integrated wakes that can extend many tens of kilometres downstream.
