    Chronic autoimmune thyroiditis (CAT), also known as Hashimoto`s thyroiditis (HT), is an autoimmune condition of the thyroid gland, frequently characterized by a diffusely enlarged thyroid, lymphocytic infiltrate, fibrosis, and strongly positive serum levels of autoimmune antibodies: anti-thyroid peroxidase (ATPO) and/or anti-thyroglobulin (ATG) antibodies (Ab). A range of values for normal thyroid tissue was previously established, but the technique was not yet used in patients with thyroid diseases.
