Managers might use this understanding, for example, with managed fish populations and the plankton they eat, to predict the rise and fall of the fish populations (Hunsicker et_al, 2011; Hacini et_al, 2021). At the population level, functional responses are measured by observing how consumer and resource population sizes change over time and space, and using these data to build models of the relationship between predator and prey density (Gill et_al, 2001; Goss-Custard et_al, 2006; Gillings et_al, 2007; Smart et_al, 2008).
