    Techniques to obtain tissue from the mediastinal tumours for pathological examination include approaches using needle biopsy, such as endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration and transbronchial needle biopsy. The pericardium further subdivides the inferior compartment into an anterior, middle, and a posterior compartment, where the heart lies in the middle compartment.
