SUMMARY

    Food insecurity has emerged as a major public health concern; and, the obligation to realise the "right to food and basic nutrition" is enshrined in both the United Nations Charter and the South African Constitution. A review of these surveys, which included children from 1-9 years old with at least one adult in the household, indicated a marked decline in household food insecurity from 52.3% in 1999 to 25.9% in 2008.
