SUMMARY

    When it was discovered in 1983, the hepatitis E virus (HEV) was initially designated as "enterically transmitted non-A and non-B hepatitis"; the first HEV genomic sequence was reported eight years later. The detection of anti-HEV IgM antibodies (9 out of 90) in patients with acute hepatitis raises awareness of hepatitis E as an emerging infection in the country.
