Risk factors, diagnosis, and treatment of neonatal fungal liver abscess: a systematic review of the literature

HIGHLIGHTS

SUMMARY

    Invasive fungal infections (IFI) are a major cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality, affecting mainly preterm and very low birth weight (VLBW) neonates ( and amp;lt;1500 g). The aim of this systematic review was to consolidate evidence and enhance the understanding on neonatal fungal liver abscesses regarding the microbiology, risk factors, clinical course, diagnosis, and treatment of these infections. An electronic search of the existing literature in PubMed and Scopus databases until 3 November 2022 was conducted using combinations of the following keywords: "fungal", "candida", "liver abscess", "hepatic abscess", "newborn*", "neonate*", and "preterm . . .
