Since the RPW larvae feed internally in tree trunks, they are difficult to detect in palm groves before the tree shows visible signs of distress in a well-advanced infestation stage, when the tree is difficult to save by treatment. In, the authors then presented the use of neural_network-based machine_learning (ML) algorithms as powerful tools for classifying healthy and infested trees, using the data recorded by an optical fiber DAS.
