Ranolazine counteracts strength impairment and oxidative stress in aged sarcopenic mice

SUMMARY

    In skeletal muscles, physiological aging leads to a typical decrease in muscle mass and strength, defined as sarcopenia. Myofiber death and reduced myogenic capability, along with muscle stem_cell reservoir exhaustion, contribute to skeletal muscle atrophy associated with a myofiber number lowering during aging. Mitochondrial dysfunction reduce muscle strength and could likely have an impact on protein synthesis and loss of muscle mass. Indeed, mitochondrial turnover and quality_control-including mitophagy, mitochondrial dynamics (fusion/fission) and biogenesis- are altered in aged muscles, thus contributing to the age-related accumulation of damaged proteins and increased ROS production . . .
