  • What: The study aimed to conduct a clinical audit of RBC transfusion practices at a district hospital in South Africa. For this study, a transfusion episode was defined as one or more units of RBCs transfused from a single order. Data were captured on a data sheet created based on the literature and study objectives. A third of the patients in this study had hypertension, which can lead to complications such as renal impairment, congestive cardiac failure and end-diastolic dysfunction, all risk factors for transfusion-associated circulatory overload .
