A newly emerging alphasatellite affects banana bunchy top virus replication, transcription, sirna production and transmission by aphids

SUMMARY

    Alphasatellites (family Alphasatellitidae) have a circular ssDNA genome encoding a Rep protein that enables autonomous replication of alphasatellite_DNA but cannot transreplicate BBTV components. IC-PCR analysis of the leaf tissues from selected DRC-2012 samples confirmed the presence of alphasatellite in the PCR-positive sample and demonstrated encapsidation of its DNA by BBTV coat protein, similar to DNA of DRC-2016 alphasatellite in BBTV-infected Cavendish (S6A Fig).
