SUMMARY
Prevalence of ASD varies, as reported in the literature, estimated to be 1-2% worldwide (Elsabbagh et_al, 2012; Baxter et_al, 2015) and 2.3% in the United_States (Maenner, 2021). Growing research has examined families that speak two or more languages and their autistic children (Jegatheesan, 2011; e_g, Hambly and Fombonne, 2012; ValicentiMcDermott et_al, 2013; Kay-Raining Bird et_al, 2016; Hampton et_al, 2017). Just as the field`s understanding of the causal mechanisms underpinning ASD have evolved, so too has the field`s understanding of children`s other life experiences, such as bilingualism.
