- How: These experiments were carried out in an ultrahigh-vacuum chamber at pressures of a few 10-11 Torr by exposing ices to proxies of GCRs in the form of energetic electrons34 at astrophysically relevant temperatures of 10 K. These conditions replicate the processing of interstellar ices in cold molecular clouds by galactic cosmic ray-initiated electron cascades over the lifetime of cold molecular clouds . . .
