    The deuterium content of a measurement is traditionally given in parts per thousand relative to the deuterium content of ocean water (i.e., δD; "Methods"). The degree to which isotopic variations follow one or the other of these precipitation or evaporation relationships is readily quantified by normalizing the δD to a reference water vapor concentration.
