The authors present three inverse-designed, topologically optimized SOI photonic building blocks: the 2 × 2 3-dB splitter/combiner, the 2 × 2 waveguide crossover, and the 2 × 2 all-forward add-drop resonator. For the optimization of the first two devices, the authors initially considered two parallel waveguides spaced 2 µm apart (forming two input waveguides and two output waveguides) and an inverse-design region in the center of the two . . .
