    Over the last 50 years, CH4 concentrations have increased by 20 % (Karl et_al, 2008; Rhee et_al, 2009) - and are expected to rise further by approximately 2 % yr-1 (Dang and Li, 2018). In fact, the marine methane release is dominated by shallow coastal environments including estuaries (up to 75 %; Weber et_al, 2019).
