Neuronal cells express the androgen receptor (AR) and androgens exert a neuroprotective role in the brain by inducing the axonal regeneration and stimulating neuron growth as well as synaptic function. The authors show neuronal cultures at 1 day in_vitro (1DIV) and 3DIV, since these developmental stages correspond to neurite outgrowth and dendritic branching, respectively. The translational impact of androgen or NGF-triggered AR/TrkA complex assembly the authors detected in PC12 cells (and other target tissues) is evident, since androgens or NGF may substitute each other`s in sustaining neuronal differentiation or transformed features . . .
