SUMMARY

    Proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) is a multifactorial process that occurs as a complication in 5-10% of rhegmatogeneous retinal detachment cases, accounting for the most common cause of failure in vitreoretinal surgery. Clinical factors associated with preoperative PVR include detachment extension and the presence of giant, large (wider than 3 disc diameters) and multiple retinal breaks. Mature RPE cells are mitotically quiescent under physiological conditions but can activate and proliferate when exposed to systemic factors resulting from the breakdown of the blood-retinal barrier following a retinal injury.
