SUMMARY
In the beginning, the Brazilian literature for young people helped the republican project of the society modernization. This project included, moreover, the publishing of the nationalist ideas intending to forget the recent past (slavery). This Article intends to show how it happens in Olavo Bilac`s books, analyzing the representation of the black characters in the poem "Os reis magos" and in the tales "Mãe Maria"; "Uma vida…" and "A borboleta negra".
