SUMMARY

    The role of emergency departments (EDs) is of importance both for the patients and the health care system. It does not only provide around the clock treatment for the acutely ill patients, but also provides the first steps in evaluating and investigating patients for diseases. Handling many contacts requires a high flow environment where patients are assessed within few hours of their arrival and a decision is made - is there a need for further observation, investigations, admission or can the patient be discharged? If ED-stay is too short it might result in incomplete . . .
