    Type 1 diabetes_mellitus (DM1), also known as insulin-dependent diabetes or juvenile diabetes, has an idiopathic or autoimmune cause in which there is a destruction of the pancreatic β-cells. Several clinical studies suggest that diabetes_mellitus is a risk factor in the prevalence, progression, and severity of periodontal disease (PD).
