Umar Kayam`s fictions provide a Javanese priyayi`s perspective on the issues that the priyayi class had to face from colonial times to the post-independence era. Throughout historical phases of colonialism and independence, priyayi class had to negotiate their traditional role and privilege with colonial power and the idea of a democratic nation.
