SUMMARY

    Increased intensity, duration, and frequency of heatwaves in recent decades have led to regular coral mass bleaching events resulting in high mortality (Hughes et_al, 2018a; Hughes et_al, 2018b). Rising sea temperatures have also been associated with increased disease susceptibility in corals (Miller et_al, 2009; Muller et_al, 2018). Cycling of carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, and host protection through produced antimicrobial compounds and competition with potential opportunistic bacteria are among possible functions of coral-associated bacteria (Daniels et_al, 2015; Rädecker et_al, 2015; Bourne et_al, 2016; Silveira et_al, 2017).
