SUMMARY
Physiological processes involved in the clearance of the airways are compromised during mechanical ventilation (MV). In this regard, highfrequency percussive ventilation (HFPV) demonstrated its ability to mobilise secretions in patients affected by cystic fibrosis and neuromuscular disease. In line with these previous results, the authors designed a physiological study to investigate the benefits of HPFV when superimposed to conventional MV in tracheostomized patients with a high amount of secretions.
