Two recent metabolomics studies reported increased levels of several energy-related signaling metabolites including succinate and a-ketoglutaric acid in patients with critical COVID-19 illness. Despite the great strides made in the understanding of COVID-19, there remains a need to identify and validate the accuracy of novel biomarkers in stratifying patients with the highest risk of developing critical COVID-19.
