Coastal sediment grain size estimates on gravel beaches using satellite synthetic aperture radar (sar)

HIGHLIGHTS

  • What: The authors explore a novel approach for retrieving the median (D50) of gravel-dominated beaches using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) spaceborne imagery. The aims of this study are (i) to compare ground-based measurements of grain size from different coastal sites across the UK (Aldeburgh Beach, Suffolk; Chesil Beach, Dorset; Thorpeness Beach, Suffolk) with satellite SAR backscatter observations to extract potential correlations between these two datasets; (ii) to subsequently use such correlations to predict the D50 over an independent test site (Weybourne Beach, Norfolk). The results from this analysis show that the maximum 10 of 17 . . .
