SUMMARY

    The authors compared two ‘pan-neuronal` transgenic lines, Syn1-cre and Snap25-IRES2cre, that are reported to drive Cre expression in neurons only (Harris et_al, 2014; Zhu et_al, 2001). SNAP-25 is expressed almost exclusively in the brain, whereas its ortholog SNAP-23, which is ~60% identical to SNAP-25, is expressed ubiquitously (Ranichandran et_al, 1996; Wang et_al, 1997). The low level of MeCP2mCherry expression in tissues seen in the Mecp2mCherryStop/y negative control is due to leaky expression of the Stopped allele that has been previously reported (Guy et_al, 2007; Robinson et_al, 2012 . . .
